Surprise, surprise. More Potter.
What ever else did you expect? Blame Alfonso.
[Potter, 'A Way Regardless']
It's all so simple.
That's what she thinks; the thought popping up unexpectedly when she walks into the bathroom.
She walks into the bathroom and there, on the counter by the sink, are two toothbrushes. Their toothbrushes. Hers and Harry's. And they're just lying there, side by side, innocently, the way they do everyday. But something about them hits her and that thought, that 'it's all so simple' pops into her head, and suddenly, she's laughing.
She's laughing and smiling and she can see herself in the mirror and she looks like a right fool, but she can't seem to stop.
Because it is all so simple. And it's always been simple, ever since she walked in to that car, looking for Neville's toad. She thinks she's probably loved him since then, since that first Halloween certainly, even if she didn't realize it until later.
And even then, even when they realized it, even at first instant, it was all so simple.
There was no life-threatening situation, no great fight, no climatic event; it was strangely appropriate, ironically appropriate, if there is such a thing.
They were down near the kitchens, trying to round up more Butterbeer for a party in the common room when Mrs Norris crossed their path and instead of running, they'd simply stood there. Her voice had been low and tinged with laughter as she said, 'Shit. We've been rumbled.' Then they were giggling and trying to stifle their giggles; she had a hand clapped over his mouth and he was holding her wrist and they'd just looked at each other and that, as they say, was that.
She looked at him and he looked at her and she thought, 'he makes me happy,' and he looked at her and thought the same thing, thought, 'she always makes me happy.' And it didn't feel like a lightening bolt or being knocked by something large and heavy. It was just a feeling of 'oh. of course.'
Then she grabbed him, or he grabbed her, they're not really sure and they're sure it doesn't matter; in any case, they grabbed each other and kissed each other, and that was how Filch found them. She was pressed against the wall and he was pressed against her and Filch couldn't tell where either of them began or ended.
They both got detention for two weeks.
From that moment on, they were together. And that was simple too. They were together and held hands and snogged and got into fights and rolled their eyes at each other and wrote each other little love letters.
Then they left Hogwarts and Harry took a long holiday and Hermione had more school and they found a flat together. A nice flat, in Muggle London, with her books and his kitchen and their bedroom and, this, their bathroom with their toothbrushes lying side by side.
She's thinking about all this, as she stands there and laughs; their life together running through her head.
And it has been simple, but she guesses everything else in their lives has been hard. They did have to defeat a Dark Lord, after all, to be able to be alive and have this flat and each other. So she guesses maybe they are so simple because everything else was so complicated.
And that's what she says when he comes in, eyebrow raised, and asks her why she's standing in their bathroom, laughing. She tells him all this and he smiles, his eyes crinkling up behind his glasses and says, 'Maybe you're right. We certainly deserve it.'
They do, she thinks, looking at him; they do deserve it. They deserve each other, and they deserve to be how happy they make each other.
And then she grabs him, or he grabs her, they're not really sure and they're sure it doesn't matter; in any case, they grab each other and kiss each other, and they still feel absolutely perfect together. She's pressed against the wall and he's pressed against her and they can't tell where either of them begins or ends.
Harry/Hermione - A kiss is all we need.
